About the Role

The Chemical Storekeeper is responsible for the safe receipt, storage, handling, issuance, and inventory control of chemicals used in mining, processing, laboratory, maintenance, and operational activities. The role ensures chemicals are stored and managed in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS), company Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. The incumbent maintains accurate inventory records, supports uninterrupted operations through timely material availability, and works closely with Procurement, Warehouse, Laboratory, Processing Plant, HSE, and Operations teams to ensure safe and efficient chemical management.

Key Responsibilities

Chemical Storage & Inventory Management

  • Receive, inspect, and verify chemical deliveries against purchase orders and delivery documentation.

  • Ensure chemicals are correctly labeled, identified, and stored according to their compatibility, hazard classification, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

  • Maintain accurate inventory records within the ERP or warehouse management system.

  • Monitor inventory levels and notify the Inventory Planning or Procurement team of replenishment requirements.

  • Conduct routine cycle counts and participate in periodic stocktakes to ensure inventory accuracy.

  • Monitor expiry dates, shelf life, and product condition, ensuring timely use or disposal of expired or damaged chemicals.

  • Apply FIFO (First-In, First-Out) or FEFO (First-Expired, First-Out) inventory principles where applicable.

Chemical Issuing & Distribution

  • Issue chemicals only against approved material requests or work orders.

  • Ensure chemicals are accurately recorded during issuance and transferred to the correct departments or work locations.

  • Coordinate the safe transportation and handling of chemicals within the facility.

  • Ensure all documentation relating to chemical receipts, issues, transfers, and returns is complete and accurate.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure chemicals are stored, handled, and transported in compliance with company HSEQ policies, regulatory requirements, and SDS instructions.

  • Maintain segregation of incompatible chemicals and ensure appropriate secondary containment is in place.

  • Conduct regular inspections of the chemical storage facility to identify leaks, spills, damaged containers, or unsafe conditions.

  • Ensure spill kits, fire extinguishers, emergency showers, eye wash stations, and other emergency equipment are available and serviceable.

  • Immediately report and assist in responding to chemical spills, incidents, or safety hazards.

  • Ensure hazardous waste chemicals are properly identified, stored, and disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate records of chemical inventory, batch numbers, expiry dates, SDS documentation, and stock movements.

  • Ensure all Safety Data Sheets are current, accessible, and available to employees handling chemicals.

  • Support internal and external audits by providing inventory records and compliance documentation.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly inventory and chemical usage reports.

Warehouse Operations

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure chemical storage facility.

  • Ensure storage racks, containers, pallets, and handling equipment are maintained in safe working condition.

  • Monitor environmental storage conditions such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation where required.

  • Assist with loading, unloading, and movement of chemical materials using appropriate equipment and safe handling procedures.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Work closely with Processing Plant, Laboratory, Maintenance, Procurement, Inventory Planning, and HSE teams to ensure uninterrupted availability of chemicals.
  • Coordinate with suppliers regarding delivery discrepancies, damaged materials, or quality concerns.
  • Communicate inventory shortages, expired stock, and operational risks to the Warehouse Supervisor.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve chemical storage practices, inventory accuracy, and warehouse efficiency.
  • Support the implementation of warehouse management systems, barcode technology, and inventory control improvements.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and continuous improvement programs related to chemical management and warehouse operations.
